Gebiet (ehemaliger Staat) im Westen von Uganda, am Albertsee, im 15./16. Jahrhundert wie andere Staaten im ostafrikanischen Seengebiet von einwandernden Hima (Rinderzüchter) durch Unterwerfung der ansässigen Nyoro (Ackerbauern) errichtet; der König trug den Titel »Mukuma«. Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert führten Kämpfe mit dem im Süden angrenzenden Buganda zu ständigem Macht- und Gebietsverlust. 1890 wurde Bunyoro Teil des britischen Protektorats Uganda; einige Bezirke, die Widerstand geleistet hatten, wurden Buganda zugeteilt. Die 1967 entmachtete Dynastie wurde 1993 wieder eingesetzt.
